Our tribute to a remarkable Edinburgh family

No.25 George Street was once the townhouse home of the Ferrier family. You may not have heard of James Ferrier, Principal Clerk at the Court of Session. He was most famous for his associations with Scottish writers such as Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott, who he entertained here. In fact, Burns was a very close family friend, so his connection to the building runs deep.

Ferrier’s most famous connection was his own daughter, author Susan Ferrier.

Miss Ferrier sold more novels in her lifetime than Jane Austen did during hers. She’s known for her vivid accounts of Scottish life and Edinburgh society, as well as her progressive views on women’s education. She and her sisters even charmed Robert Burns into writing a poem, To Miss Ferrier, perhaps even within the walls of this hotel. We went one better, and dedicated an entire suite to the Ferrier family.

We’re exceptionally proud of our hotel’s history of entertaining and inspiring literary legends. Ask us, we’d love to tell you more.
